Paper
Facts
In the UK
we import 60% of the wood fibre we use to make paper and card. The further the fibre travels the more money and fuel are used.
About 25% of what we throw away is paper.
Forests which have been planted for future paper making support
fewer different species of living things (in other words have lower biodiversity) than ancient woodlands.
The average family uses 6 trees worth of paper each year.
Recycling paper uses less energy and water than making paper from
trees.
Waste paper which is dumped in landfill sites gradually rots down
and produces methane, which is a dangerous greenhouse gas.
7 million trees are cut down every year just to make disposable
nappies.
Newspapers and magazines are recycled and made into more paper
and packaging materials.
Office grade paper (e.g., photocopies, letters) is recycled and
made into more office grade paper. It's often used to make tissues and toilet roll too.
